I am a Russian artist living in Glasgow. I create nostalgic paintings tinged with intimacy and innocence. Working from the archive, imagination and observation, a conversation emerges between real subjects and something otherworldly, uncanny. I am motivated by themes of immersion through pattern. The Caucasus, with my family’s Ukrainian and Ossetian roots, becomes an interesting space to explore. My work is a response to a turbulent time of grief and loss. I am interested in post-Soviet spaces that are loving and familiar, a process of presenting history in the form of personal and collective memory. Being homesick for a home one never had. Stuck between history, place and time, I crystallize the collective experience of the past.
